What is this?

Two weeks at Gaddens Sewing Club dedicated to trouser fitting and making, followed by a trouser making weekend on March 5/6th (details to follow)

Open to all sewers of all levels and to ladies and gentlemen!

How can I join in?

You can arrange exactly what you would like to do during this time to fit in with your life and family. Studio available for you to book between 10am-7pm each day.

What is involved?

Firstly, Jayne requires two appointments lasting one hour each and separate time for Jayne to make your bespoke pattern. One to One fitting is required, or indeed with a friend or partner, at a time of your choosing. This is a necessary part of the workshop in order to make your beautiful trousers and to attend the Trouser Making weekend later.

You can choose from:-

  • Welcome from Jayne, at Gaddens Sewing Club, who will serve a cream tea so you can get to know some of your fellow sewers followed by:

‘How to look your best in your trousers’ by Sandra Domeney, The Wardrobe Doctor, 2hrs £20

Hands on Technique talks from Jayne during this time on all aspects of trouser making :-

  • 1.Cutting out and preparation of fabric, marking and accuracy 1hour £10h

  • 2.What can you do with your trouser pattern? 3hrs £30

  • 3.Zips, fasteners and zip protectors including fly fastening 3hrs £30

  • 4.Hems, length and taping 2hrs £20

  • 5.Embellishments and hanging 1hr £10

  • 6.Pockets and Pressing 2 hours £20

You can choose which talks that you would like to do and therefore make up your own workshop.

If you would prefer to have time with Jayne to help with your trousers, you can book £20 per hour, separately.

Jayne has been making trousers for many years and has been taught by many of the great tutors of our time so has a wealth of experience to pass on as this has been her particular interest.

Gaddens is situated in a lovely spot in The New Forest so why don’t you come for a few days, enjoy the trouser fun and explore the forest. There are lots of places to stay.

If you are local, come and join us.

Please email Jayne (jayne@gaddens.co.uk) if you are interested or have any queries about this exciting trouser sewing course or phone Jayne on 07747866785

You will come away with a well-fitting trouser pattern, have fun with other sewers, and increase your knowledge on trouser making and hopefully have a sewing holiday!

Covid precautions

At The Sewing Club we request that everyone is double vaccinated and does a LFT before they come so that everyone feels safe in the current climate.

Location: Sewing Studio, Gaddens, Charles’s Lane Ringwood, BH24 3FB, Hampshire

Contact: Jayne Edwards

For the past 14 years I have been teaching Residential Couture Sewing Courses in Palm Springs, California with Claire Shaeffer, in North Bay, Ontario with Kathryn Brenne, and also near my home in the New Forest in collaboration with Jayne Edwards at her beautiful country home, Gaddens Manor. They have proved to be a huge success and we have built a loyal following of sewing enthusiasts both here and abroad.

In 2021, Jayne and I plan to offer four courses. Come and enjoy a sewing holiday, with like-minded sewers. You will have the unique opportunity to study with me, a Couturier with over 35 years experience, in a class of no more than 8 students, in beautiful and relaxing surroundings. The 5 day workshops will begin with a traditional English afternoon tea at 4.00 pm on the Sunday followed by a light supper that evening. You will have the opportunity to meet me, Jayne and all the other students. Classes will then run from 9am to 5:00pm Monday to Friday, with breakfast, tea and coffee breaks, lunch and light evening supper all provided. Also all the equipment, fabrics and trimmings are provided for all the courses.

This year we have come up with a great concept, a capsule collection! I intend to offer a fabulous swing back coat in wool velour, a classic English Tailored jacket to coordinate with it, in specially commissioned tweed made hand woven for me in Scotland and a beautiful pair of couture flannel trousers made from your own trouser block. You can take all three classes or just one of them; the pieces stand alone as well as part of a wonderful coordinated look.

I am also working again with Kathryn Brenne at Gaddens and we will be offering an unstructured jacket made in a knit fabric that looks just like a woven tweed but gives you a fantastic, easy, soft jacket that is still structured and tailored and very smart.

The Couture Swing Back Coat - Oct 3rd - 8th 2021

This was one of my first client commissions back 2002, it has always been a favorite design on my website so I have finally decided to adapt my original pattern so it can be made in various sizes. In this class you will learn the techniques required to make this fabulous swing back 7/8 coat. The coat is unlined and finished using hand finished run and fell seams. The collar is pad stitched and the pocket detail has a clever lining finish! I have sourced a fabulous, pure wool coating from a London supplier I have worked with for many years; it has a beautiful drape and sheen and will make this coat look and feel truly luxurious. The course will cover, pin marking a couture pattern, trace tacking and pad stitching a collar. Making a couture pocket and working with hand finished run and fell seams and so much more.

The Classic Fitted English Tailored Jacket - July 11th - 16th 2021

In early 2019 I was asked to re-make a tweed jacket for a client, she wanted a jacket I had designed 30 years ago remade. The jacket was such a success I thought it would be great to offer it as a class. The jacket will be a classic 4-button jacket made in bespoke tweed woven especially for the course in 4 colour ways. The jacket will have a contrast collar and jets to the flap pockets, with bone buttons. The course will cover trace tacking a pattern, backing with hair canvas, pad stitching a collar and revers, putting on a collar and setting in sleeves by hand and making jetted flap pockets. At the end of the week I also hope to show how to put in a pure silk lining by hand and how to tackle hand made buttonholes!

The unstructured Jacket with Kathryn Brenne

September 26th - October 1st 2021

I am once again thrilled to be able to work with Kathryn Brenne at Gaddens. Kathryn first developed this jacket technique for an article in Vogue Pattern Magazine in 2015, as a men’s unlined jacket in a knit fabric. She was so impressed with the results that she made one for herself. Since then, Kathryn has made 4 versions, and I have made 2 for myself! I have cut and developed the pattern for this jacket available in 5 sizes. This jacket, which is actually made in a knit fabric, that looks like a woven tweed, is supper comfortable to wear, has some couture techniques to give it structure and all the seams and inside finishes are bound in contrast print. You will pad stitch a collar, make a pair of couture-finished patch pockets and hand worked buttonholes, if you want!

The Perfect Couture Tailored Trouser

July 4th - 9th 2021

One of the first classes I ever ran with Claire Shaffer in Palm Springs, almost 20 years ago, was this tailored trouser class. A well fitted pair of trousers is a Couture staple and in this class you get to draft your very own personal pattern, using a drafting technique I have developed and used very successfully with all my couture clients. We will fit a toile of your trouser and then make the trouser up in a beautiful menswear grey flannel. These trousers will look great with the jacket and coat or as a stand alone piece. You will learn how to put in a fly front zip and finish a couture waistband creating the perfect pair of tailored trousers. You will get a personal trouser block in card, a cotton toile and a pair of beautiful wool trousers!

The Gaddens Sewing School is a purpose built, fully equipped studio space where all sewing tools are provided in individual sewing kits. We will create the atmosphere of a Couture Workroom with large covered tables. Students will learn hand-sewing skills as they sit together in the workroom and sew.
